Fired? Now What
So you were let go…laid off…fired…whatever your company called it. Now you’re left scrambling to find a new job. On Women For Hire, there is post after post on layoffs that have been announced. Are you one of the unlucky ones that were affected? If so, you don’t have to sit at home and mope about it (for too long)
Many times job seekers believe that if they’re fired from a job then getting another one is going to be next to impossible. That’s absolutely not true. Are you going to have to address it? Yes. Will is be a little uncomfortable for you? Yes. Can you put a put a positive spin on it? YES!
Getting laid off is usually not something a person wants to experience - especially if it’s unexpected. But if it does catch you off guard, take a minute to catch your breath, dust off your pants, and move on. It’s time to start networking (which you should keep on doing even when you’re employed), update your cover letter and resume and start job hunting.
When your firing comes up in an interview (which it will), have something positive to say about it. You could say that you were disappointed that it the job wasn’t the right fit for you but you’ve learned valuable skills that will help you with your next endeavor.
One of the best things you can do is to have a reference by your former boss. This will show that even though the work relationship didn’t work out for the two of you, it doesn’t mean you weren’t a valuable employee. It’ll prove that they believe you have a lot to offer some other company.
So, chin up! You’re not the only was who has even been given a pink slip…and you definitely won’t be the last.
