Phone Interviews - Take Them Seriously

I was reading a post by Demetrius from GetNoticedFirst Blog about phone interviews and it dawned on me that many job seekers don’t even take these interviews seriously. That is such a wrong thing to do and it can end your chances of getting a face-to-face interview right then and there.

There’s an article that I wrote Preparing for a Phone Interview that goes into a lot of details about how to get ready for this increasingly common type of interview. Right now I want to stress the importance of taking this interview seriously.

Why are these phone interviews becoming more popular? Let’s think about that for a moment. The employer doesn’t have to pay to fly you out to meet with them (if you’re relocating); they don’t have to schedule multiple interviews with multiple people; and it’s just easier ;-) If an employer can screen out candidates over the phone with an interview between an HR Manager or the Department Manager and the candidate, doesn’t it make sense that they would want to do that?

Just because it’s over the phone doesn’t mean you aren’t being “seen.” That employer is taking notes on you and passing judgement just like they would in a face-to-face meeting. Treat it as such and you could find yourself in a meeting like that in no time.
